Security in the Petrochemical Sector

Key executives from three security companies shared a joint physical security solution during a petrochemical-centric seminar in Houston on February 23. Our own Laura Williams, a content development editor with Security Products, moderated the event as physical security practitioners from leading petrochemical organizations discussed the challenges of maintaining CFATS compliance.

Security experts also talked about the benefits of a holistic approach to physical security management, including how an integrated approach helps streamline compliance, manage security risks and reduce overall operating costs.

Of course, I’m very proud of our Laura for her participation, and I can assure you she spent plenty of time prepping for this opportunity.

All three companies presented views on integrated compliance and risk management solutions that can automate and enforce global physical security policies, helping to ensure both governance and compliance using existing physical security and IT infrastructure.

The integrated solution assists in covering 17 risk-based performance standards, including restricting area perimeter security, securing site assessments, staff surety and reporting significant security incidents.

In the petrochemical world, this solution helps security practitioners define, audit and enforce internal controls specific to compliance initiatives across a global and disparate physical security structure.

The solution also helps manage all regulations and associated controls, automate assessment, remediation and reporting as defined in review cycles. The solution also triggers compliance-based actions, such as rule-based generation of actions and penalties, based on physical events.

During the seminar, Bosch presented its high-performance imaging products, which provide levels of visual performance to any physical security infrastructure. Proximex showed off its Surveillint product, which integrates alarm information and video from multiple security systems to increase incident response times, improve operational efficiency and reduce business risk; and Quantum Secure illustrated SAFE, its physical identity and access management software suite, which helps manage identities, related-area access as well as enforce governance across diverse and disparate physical access control systems.

We have come a long way from the early days of fuzzy analog CCTV systems. During that time, we have had to migrate from analog to digital signals. When IP-based network cameras arrived, they opened a new world of quality and connectivity but also introduced plenty of challenges. Thankfully, network devices today have become smart enough to discover themselves and even self-configure to some degree. While some IT expertise is certainly required, things are much smoother these days. The biggest change is in how fast security cameras and supporting infrastructure are evolving. Read Now
